Essential Question: How do I cite online sources?
Learning Overview and Objectives
Students learn the format for citing different types of online sources in a bibliography.
  • Elicit from students the different online resources they have used in the past.
  • After creating the list ask them why it is important to share where you got your resources in your research.

  • Ask students what information needs to be included in a bibliography
    • Add in any info they might forget. (author, title, date published)
    • Online Sources Handout (Description of three main online resources online news article, database, professional site)
      • Walk student through the handout and discuss how citing sources online is different from citing print sources.
      • Be sure to point out the differences and similarities with citing each type of source
      • Key Questions
        • Why is the date you accessed the cite important?
        • Why is it important to begin the bibliography during the research process?
        • Why are there no names for some of the professional sites?
        • Group work
          • Students are given online resources and asked to cite at least three of these sources
        • Interactive works cited
          • Each student is given a different section of one work cited entry. Students must figure out the correct order they need to stand in to make the work cited entry correct.
